TRACY CARROLL

Instructional Designer

Los Angeles-based instructional designer Tracy Carroll creates online training courses for a wide range of clients in business (Eli Lilly & Company, Kimberley-Clark), academia (Concordia University, University of Wisconsin), and government (Los Angeles County Superior Court, U.S. Army). Her unique design philosophy combines a focus on changing measurable behavior with engaging, creative, scenario-based content.

Rather than simply bombarding users with information, Carroll begins with a different approach. “As an instructional designer, I like to understand what behavior my clients are looking to change.” She then designs training scenarios in which users can learn from the consequences of their own responses. Carroll creates most of her courses using Articulate Storyline, which allows her to create interactive lessons and quizzes using a variety of tools.

Carroll is a big fan of animation as a way to enhance the online learning experience. “It’s great to use something that’s inherently engaging. Animation is inherently engaging. Besides,” she adds, “It’s just so fun to work with.” Plotagon Studio offers her a way to create 3D animated characters and videos quickly and easily. She then exports the finished products as MP4 videos and inserts them into Storyline to add interaction.

Carroll credits her previous career as a high school teacher with instilling a love of creative learning techniques. “Probably because I was a teacher in the inner city for several years, I learned how important it is to engage your audience.” She went out of her way to make her high school classes fun for the students by offering them creative challenges, to which they responded well. “There was a low-dread factor, and more of a cooperation factor.”
